Ruff Start Rescue is a no-kill, foster-based animal welfare organization.
We are located in Central Minnesota, but serve all of the Minnesota community. Our rescue is composed of 600 volunteers and fosters who are dedicated to helping animals in need. We are group of passionate animal lovers who open our hearts and homes to provide temporary refuge to animals in need.
We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs, cats, and small critters and work very hard to place them in loving forever homes.
We do not have a shelter by choice. We believe that a home environment is far more desirable and less stressful than a shelter or kennel. So, we rely almost exclusively on volunteer foster homes to provide temporary housing and care of these special animals until they find their forever homes!
We also seek to educate the community about pressing animal welfare issues and the importance of rescue. Our hope is that with these efforts we will see less homeless animals in the generations to come. Since our inception in 2010, we have saved over 8,700 animals and educated 4,500 children and their families about the importance of animal rescue and responsibility.
Along with our animal care and education efforts, we also assist the public with spay/neuter funding for community owned and feral barn cats. Since 2014, we have provided free spay/neuter services to 865 cats and counting. In conjunction with this service we also donate surplus pet food and products to our local food shelf each month to assist families who need assistance providing for their pets. Our hope is that these services will help keep pets and families together.
